Our English programs build the essential skills students need to understand and use English effectively in increasingly complex situations. Students explore various types of texts to learn how meaning is shaped, conveyed, interpreted, and reflected
They develop basic skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, helping them use language confidently and skillfully.
These connected skills support students to become confident communicators, creative thinkers, and active, informed members of society.
FOUNDATION LEVEL:
At this level, the focus is on developing basic interpersonal communication skills. The topics are chosen to build on everyday language and subjects students are familiar with
Skills/Topics: basic code phonics and decodable readers, recount, description, personal opinion.
PRELIMINARY LEVEL:
At this level, the focus is on expanding the knowledge and skills developed in the Foundation program by broadening vocabulary and introducing increasingly complex grammatical features.
Skills/Topics: extended code phonics and decodable readers, recount, description, personal opinion.
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL:
At this level, the focus is on narrative and persuasive texts. Students learn to write imaginative and persuasive texts and learn to employ a range of language techniques to write well-structured and cohesive paragraphs about various topics.
Texts/Topics: Short stories, Aboriginal Australian stories, sustainability, student rights, technology and harmony.
TRANSITION LEVEL:
At this level, the focus is on deepening the understanding of structures in narrative and persuasive texts. Students explore the concepts of audience and purpose and are introduced to a broader range of literary techniques to create personal, creative, and critical texts for a range of audiences and purposes.
Texts/Topics: Short stories, Shakespearean texts (abridged version), sustainability, fairness, technology and relationships.
